Monthly dividend ETFs: examples by category
There is no single “best” monthly dividend ETF — funds that pay every month get their cash from very different places. Below are examples from FillMonth's dataset grouped by how they generate income, with trailing figures from the same data pull.
Not financial advice. FillMonth is an educational tool. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Past dividends may not continue; verify current data and consider a licensed professional.
How we picked these examples
Every fund below made 12 ex-dividend distributions in the trailing 12 months of FillMonth's dataset (Yahoo Finance dividend history via yfinance, pulled 2026-10-15). “TTM” is the sum of those per-share distributions; “TTM ÷ price” is simple trailing math from the same pull, not a forward yield or a promise. We group funds by how they generate income, because that matters more than the headline number. “Best” depends entirely on your goals — this page ranks nothing.

What the categories mean
Dividend-focused stock ETFs
These hold dividend-paying companies and pass along the dividends they collect. Monthly distributions can vary in size month to month because the underlying companies mostly pay quarterly. Trailing figures tend to be lower than options-income funds, but the income comes from company dividends rather than option premiums.
Options-income ETFs
These funds sell call options (directly or through instruments such as equity-linked notes) and distribute much of the premium. That can produce high monthly distributions, but it typically caps upside in strong markets, distributions can drop when volatility falls, and part of a payout can be classified as return of capital. A high trailing number is not the same as a high total return.
Bond ETFs
Bond funds commonly distribute interest monthly. Payouts move with interest rates and credit conditions, and fund prices fall when rates rise. Interest from bond funds is generally taxed as ordinary income in taxable accounts, unlike qualified stock dividends.
Preferred and global high-yield funds
Preferred stock funds sit between bonds and stocks and are sensitive to interest rates and to the financial sector, which issues many preferreds. Global “super dividend” funds chase the highest yielders, which historically has included companies whose payouts later fell.
Questions to ask before any monthly ETF
- Where does the payout come from? Dividends, interest, option premium, or return of capital — check the fund's distribution notices and Section 19 notices where applicable.
- What has total return looked like? Price change plus distributions, not distributions alone.
- What does it cost? Check the current expense ratio on the issuer's site.
- Does it fill a month you actually lack? Map your holdings in the free calendar first.
