How to aim for monthly dividend income
“Monthly dividend income” usually means cash shows up in most or all calendar months — not that every holding must pay monthly. Many investors get there by mixing ordinary quarterly payers on different schedules, then optionally adding monthly payers. This page is an educational overview. It is not investment advice and does not recommend any security.
Step 1: See what you already collect
Before changing anything, map the holdings you own today. Enter tickers and shares in the FillMonth calendar (or import a CSV). You will see estimated income by month based on each ticker's trailing 12 months of ex-dividend events, and which months sit below your average.
That thin-month list is the planning target. Filling gaps is optional; some people prefer a lumpier calendar and a cash buffer instead.
Step 2: Understand the three common quarterly cycles
In our dataset as of 2026-10-15, familiar names illustrate the usual patterns (TTM = trailing 12-month dividends per share):
| Cycle (ex-months) | Examples in dataset | TTM / price (dataset) |
|---|---|---|
| Jan · Apr · Jul · Oct | PG, T, VZ, ABBV | PG $4.292 / $157.08 · T $1.39 / $23.50 · VZ $3.504 / $44.40 · ABBV $6.83 / $283.40 |
| Feb · May · Aug · Nov | JNJ, MMM, XOM, CVX, MSFT, AAPL | JNJ $5.28 / $253.28 · XOM $4.12 / $174.68 · CVX $7.05 / $219.32 · MSFT $3.64 / $539.44 · AAPL $1.06 / $342.00 |
| Mar · Jun · Sep · Dec | KO, PEP, HD, MO, SCHD, VYM | KO $2.10 / $92.00 · PEP $5.806 / $128.38 · HD $9.29 / $308.24 · SCHD $1.055 / $34.10 · VYM $3.676 / $159.97 |
Owning names (or ETFs) from more than one cycle is one way people reduce empty months without using monthly products. Exact ex-months can shift; always verify current schedules.
Step 3: Know what monthly payers are (and are not)
Monthly payers in FillMonth's set include equity REITs such as O (TTM $3.248, price $55.55), ADC ($3.174 / $66.56), and EPR ($3.645 / $55.15); the BDC MAIN ($4.330 / $54.27); and income ETFs such as JEPI ($4.563 / $57.16) and QYLD ($2.133 / $18.74). See the full example tables on monthly dividend stocks & ETFs.
Monthly cash flow does not mean lower risk. Covered-call ETFs, mortgage REITs, and high-distribution closed-end funds can cut payouts or erode net asset value. Past TTM amounts are not guarantees.
Step 4: Re-check the calendar after any change
Add a hypothetical position in FillMonth (you can remove it anytime — data stays local) and watch which bars rise. The goal many dividend investors describe is fewer “near-zero” months and a clearer picture of annual income before tax — not maximizing a single month.
Step 5: Keep taxes and pay-date lag in mind
- FillMonth figures are before tax and assume no dividend reinvestment.
- Months follow ex-dividend dates; broker deposits can land in the next month.
- Account type (taxable vs tax-advantaged) changes what “paycheck” means after tax — talk to a tax professional for your situation.
Where FillMonth Pro fits
The free calendar shows gaps. FillMonth Pro (about $7/month, waitlist open) is planned to suggest a short list of dividend payers that have historically paid in your weakest months, plus calm alerts when a holding cuts or raises or an ex-date approaches. Suggestions will still be educational context, not personalized advice.
